<p>In 1961, the USAF ordered the US Navy's McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II carrier-based interceptor with minor changes for Tactical Air Command and gave it the designation F-110A. The USAF also ordered YRF-110A and RF-110A reconnaissance variants. While awaiting delivery, the USAF borrowed a number of US Navy Phantoms and one of these (149405) appeared at Edwards AFB, California, in 1962 with the F-110A appellation painted on its nose, although this was incorrect for this particular airframe. The actual F-110A never flew with that designation.

<p>On 18 September 1962, the designation system for US aircraft was unified to bring the other military services in line with the method the USAF and its predecessor services had already been using. Under the new arrangement, the F-110 and 10 US Navy types were given new numbers to facilitate uniformity. The F for fighter series began again at F-1. The F-110A, YRF-110A and RF-110A thus became the F-4C, YRF-4C and RF-4C, respectively.
